Ah, the suburbs. More than
half of us call them home. And whether you're a lifelong native, a recent
immigrant, a conflicted expatriate, or a sworn enemy, there's no denying the
enormous influence exerted on our lives by this most American of all
environs. But for all the books, movies and sitcoms that have either
eulogized or vilified them, the suburbs have been largely ignored by musical
theater - until now.
Suburb takes an insightful, witty, and nuanced view of the world of the
lawnmower, the barbecue, and the mall. Its sharply-written scenes and 17
songs cover a broad expanse of physical and emotional territory, from the
innocent joy of a child walking to school to the growing pains of a young
couple facing new responsibilities; from the profound satisfaction of the
do-it-yourselfer to the profound malaise of the daily commuter. Suburb
enjoyed a critically acclaimed run at Off-Broadway's York Theatre in 2001
after an equally well-received staging at the 99-seat Alleyway Theatre in
Buffalo in the fall of 2000.
